The New York Times number one bestseller is nationally talked about: as seen/heard on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Morning Joe, CBS This Morning, The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rich Roll, and more.

“Urgent and important…an essential read for bosses, parents, coaches and anyone interested in improving performance.” (Daniel H. Hong)

“A lot of important and exploratory information on performance, success, and education.” (Susan Cain, bestselling author of Silent)

Many experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead his or her field should start early, focus intensely, and spend as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. If you procrastinate or procrastinate, you will never catch up with those who came before. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule.

David Epstein reviewed the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He found that in most fields – especially those that are complex and unpredictable – generalists, not experts, are prioritized to excel. Generalists often find their way late, and they juggle multiple interests rather than focusing on one. They are also more creative, agile, and able to make connections that their more specialized peers cannot see.

Provocative, stern, and feisty, Range makes a compelling case for actively harboring inefficiencies. Failing a test is the best way to learn. People who quit often end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most influential inventors are multidisciplinary rather than deepening their knowledge in a single field. As professionals shrink further while computers master many of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive develop.

Sometimes, I feel like I should stay in my lane and not be distracted by my interests. This book helped me understand the benefits of taking the time to learn things outside of your work area. It will give the opportunity for intersections to meet and solutions to be found. I would recommend this to anyone who has recently rotated or is interested in rotating their career or focus.

Interested in more than one thing? This is a book that helps you maintain your self-image, provides you with avenues to become better, and learns to make breakthroughs through a variety of interests.
I enjoyed each chapter on its own and all together like a book. Highly recommended and very easy to listen to.
