Red Knife – Cork O’Connor, Book 8, Audiobook Online By: William Kent Krueger

Private investigator Cork O’Connor finds himself caught in the middle of a racial gang war that is turning picturesque Tamarack County, Minnesota into a battlefield.

When the daughter of a powerful businessman dies of an addiction to meth, her father, the strong-willed and brutal Buck Reinhardt, vows revenge. His target is the Red Boyz, a group of young Ojibwe accused of supplying the girl with a fatal dose of the drug. When the head of the Red Boyz and his wife are murdered in a manner that suggests execution, the Ojibwe gang mobilizes and the citizens of Tamarack County stand ready to fight, white against red.

Both sides turn to Cork O’Connor, a man of diverse heritage, to uncover the truth behind the murders. A former sheriff, Cork lived, fought, and nearly died keeping the small town streets safe and his family safe from harm. He knows that violence is never a virtue, but he believes that sometimes it is a necessary response to the evil that men do. In a race to find answers before the bloodshed spreads, Cork himself is involved in the darkest of deeds. As the unspeakable unfolds in the remote and beautiful place he calls home, Cork is forced to face a terrible truth: Violence is an unbridled monster.

In Red Knife, Krueger gives listeners a vivid picture of the racial conflict in a small town in America, as well as a sensitive look at the secrets we keep from even those closest to us. and the destructive nature of all that goes unspoken between father and son. sons, husbands and wives, friends and lovers.

I have listened to many of this author’s books. He brings so much of human nature to all his books, good vs depravity and not so well directed.bringing First Nation traditions and knowledge of life into lives of main characters is impressive. All books are very well done. I can’t imagine any other narrator doing these books, wouldn’t be the same! Not a light read but excellently done

Every time I start the next book in the Cork O’Connor series, I think it might be the last one I hear. I’m happy to say this is the best so far. I have to admit that in the end it was hard to listen to what was going on, but sadly it is relevant to the present moment.
I’m not sure about the next book but I’ll give it a go after pausing the series, which isn’t unusual for me.
