Remain in Love is an entertaining book by author Chris Frantz.
In Remain in Love, Frantz writes about the beginnings of Talking Heads – their days as art students in Providence, moving into a sparse loft on Chrystie Street, Frantz, Weymouth and Byrne shared where write music that defines an era. Frantz describes life on tour, down to the meals and clothes worn – while revealing the mechanics of a long and complicated working relationship with a fickle leader.

At the heart of Remain in Love is Frantz’s love for Weymouth. Their once-in-a-lifetime relationship as lovers, musicians, and bandmates and how their creativity surged when they formed their own Tom Tom Club band, bringing to a fresh Afro style. Caribbean beat hits like “Genius of Love”.

Paired with memorable places and names from the era – Grace Jones, Andy Warhol, Stephen Sprouse, Lou Reed, Brian Eno and Debbie Harry among them.

One takeaway is clear from this book: Chris Frantz is an impressionist. If you want a bunch of lists of the stars he met at which parties, where he was, what he ate, what he bought, you’ll find it here. All is well if there is one (or any) interesting anecdote attached to these encounters, but most of the time there isn’t. He also tries very hard to combat his image as a rather serious member of the band: my favorite moment is when he recounts meeting Tina while he was smoking a Camel. no filter. A cigarette without a filter? Rock and roll! It’s a strange mixture of self-aggravation, insecurity, bitterness, and sassy that can and should be more than that. Yes, there are some fun, enjoyable recollections in the making, but this is an unbalanced book in many ways, and is seen as a missed opportunity to record one of the most exclusive bands. most original of the last century, in one of its most innovative. musical eras.
