To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before meets The Farewell in this “entertaining and nuanced” romantic comedy (Kirkus Reviews) about a college student who hires a fake boyfriend to appease her Taiwanese parents tradition, leading to disastrous results, from the famous author of the American Panda.

Chloe Wang is nervous about introducing her parents to her boyfriend, because the truth is that she hasn’t met him either. She hired him from Rent for Your’ Rents, a fake boyfriend company trained to impress even the most traditional Asian parents.

Drew Chan’s passion is art, but after being cut off by his parents for dropping out of college to pursue his dream, he became an employee of Rent for Your’ Rents to keep a roof over his head. Fortunately, learning processes like “Type C parents prefer quiet, kind, PDA gestures” came naturally to him.

When Chloe hires Drew, the task is simple: convince her parents that the fake Drew is worth their approval so they stop pressuring her to accept a marriage proposal from Hongbo, a rich young bachelor have (and are slimmer) among their close-knit Asian-American community.

But when Chloe begins to fall for the real Drew – who, unlike his impersonator, certainly doesn’t ‘deserve to be hired’ – her carefully orchestrated life begins to unravel. Can she figure out what she wants before she loses everything?

I really like this story. Definitely five stars for originality, performance, cultural education and sense of inclusion. My only concern is that the heroine never told her parents exactly how badly the fiance they had chosen had treated her badly. I have to believe that if they knew the details, they would behave differently.

This book is full of emotions and I love the characters, especially Drew. I often laugh and gasp at the situations that Chloe and Drew find themselves in. The development arc of all the characters is amazing and the cultural references throughout (traditions, beliefs, cuisine, language) are a highlight for me.
