This audiobook includes an episode of the Book Club Girl Podcast, featuring an interview with Jennifer Chiaverini about Women of the Resistance.

This is an important book. Well researched, clear, overall worth reading. But in the end, I realized that I hadn’t developed an emotional connection with the characters. They seem more like human sketches than fully articulated three-dimensional people. After reading several other historical fiction books about this same era (I’m Looking At You Kate Quinn, Olivia Hawker, Kate Atkinson), this one was the least intriguing.

I have heard many books about World War II, but this one is unique. This book begins before the war begins and sets the scene in what was happening in everyday life in Germany before Hitler came to power. The story then travels with the characters for brief periods of time until the war ends. I have never heard/read a book that chronicles the history of this war so closely. Yes, it was a bit tedious at times, but it also worked perfectly to help me better understand the flow of this epic historical event.
