Rock Force The American Paratroopers Who Took Back Corregidor And Exacted MacArthur’s Revenge on Japan – Audiobook Online By: Kevin Maurer

From the co-author of No Easy Day’s number one New York Times bestseller, comes a World War II thriller about American paratroopers who capture a Japanese-held island fortress.

“Rock Force is a beautifully told war story: friendship, courage and despair, and horror… One of the most interesting books ever written about the War in the Pacific.” (Mitch Weiss, co-author of the New York Times best-selling Countdown 1945)

In late December 1941, General Douglas MacArthur, caught off guard by the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, was forced to retreat to Corregidor, a rocky island fortress at the mouth of Manila Bay. Months later, by order of the president, the general was swept away into the dark, leaving his troops to their fate. It is bitter medicine for a fiercely proud warrior who always protects his people. He famously declared “I’ll be back”, but Corregidor’s humiliation haunted him, even earning him the mocking nickname “Dugout Doug”.

In early 1945, MacArthur returned to the Philippines, his eyes fixed on Corregidor. To take back the island, he called up the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, a well-trained veteran parachute unit. Their mission was to jump onto the island – surrounded by steep cliffs, riddled with bomb craters, bristling with broken tree trunks full of deadly spikes – and claim it from some 6,700 Japanese defenders. The version is waiting, fully equipped and ready to fight to the death.

Drawing from first-hand accounts and personal interviews with veterans who survived the battle, acclaimed war correspondent and bestselling author Kevin Maurer dives into the extraordinary story. In this book, uncover the astonishing stories of courage and heroism in the historic but largely forgotten clash of the Pacific War. This is an intimate story of extraordinary soldiers who display extraordinary courage and triumph, with blood and sacrifice, to atone for General MacArthur’s sins.

I really enjoyed this book written as narrated by the men who jumped to the top of this heavily defended island and defeated the fanatical and numerically superior Japanese defenders. As a former paratrooper, the terms and descriptions of the 1945 combat jumps brought back memories of my peacetime jump training in the 1970s. A well-written book with excellent descriptions of Battalions, Companies and Battalions combat tactics and operations during World War II in the Pacific..

What a wonderful story about a little-known event. This action was not well known and before formidable opponents unknown, the 503rd Parachute Regiment landed on the top of Corregidor and after weeks of fighting conquered the island. I wish there were more maps when describing battle locations, otherwise this is a great story, I highly recommend it.
