“Alexis Schaitkin’s gripping debut novel, Saint X, is an audiobook lover’s dream…. Line up for this one for a dreamy, murderous pleasure.” (Paste)
Hailed as “a book’s masterpiece” and “brilliant and unflinching”, Alexis Schaitkin’s stunning debut, Saint X, is a haunting portrait of haunting, grieving grief. And the relationship between the two sisters never really had a chance to understand each other.
Claire was only seven years old when her college-going sister, Alison, disappeared on the last night of their family vacation at a resort on the Caribbean island of Saint X. A few days later, Alison’s body was found in a remote place nearby spicy, and two local men – staff at the resort – were arrested. But the evidence is thin, the timeline goes against it, and the men are soon released. The story turned into national tabloid news, a terrible mystery that will not be solved. For Claire and her parents, there is only a way back to a broken life.
Years later, Claire is living and working in New York City when a brief but fateful encounter leads her to Clive Richardson, one of the men initially suspected of killing her sister. It’s the moment that leads Claire to pursue the truth obsessively – not only to find out what happened the night Alison died, but also to answer the elusive question: Who exactly is her sister? Who? At seven, Claire was barely old enough to know her: A beautiful, whimsical, provocative 18-year-old at a tumultuous time of identity formation.
As Claire patiently follows Clive, hoping to earn his trust, waiting for negligence to reveal the truth, an unlikely bond forms between them, two people whose lives are forever separated. marked by the same tragedy. For fans of Emma Cline’s The Girls and Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies, Saint X is a perfectly drawn and deeply moving story that culminates in a strongly emotional ending.
Praise Saint X:
“This is a wondrous book, a kaleidoscopic examination of race and privilege, family and self, told with the compelling, dynamic focus of a crime novel. Excellent and not faltering, Saint X marks the debut of an amazingly talented writer. I simply couldn’t stop reading.” (Chang-Rae Lee, author of On Such a Full Sea)
Atmospheric rich, alternating cold satire and passionate romance, Alexis Schaitkin’s brilliant debut novel Saint X imagines a choir of voices following the rape/murder of a young girl. privileged American girl is allegedly on vacation in an unfamiliar Caribbean country. Part ‘true crime’ thriller and part coming of age novel narrated by the dead girl’s sister, Saint X is an irresistible suspense and wisdom. okay.” (Joyce Carol Oates)
AMAZING. Isn’t it strange that I’m proud of Alexis Schaitken for writing such a great novel? A beautiful beach of trash is read not as trash or for the beach. Turn pages, shed tears, poignant and daring af. Who knew a true-crime novel about a gripping fable during the week of 1990s Lifetime would lead to poignant consideration of racism, classism, family, love , honesty and fear? I loved this book, highly recommend, and the narration is a Symphony of PERFECT.
I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. It is more than a mystery. It is a look into the minds of different human beings and how our reality intertwines with those around us and affects others in ways we may never know. The story itself is told from different perspectives that weave together until you’re not sure which plot excites you the most.
