This set of ten books is generally very good. The weak link is this novel…so much has happened. Things are too linear and too many “convenient” episodes happen when it becomes clear that the author needs to move the plot. This is supposed to be the climax of the series, which every other novel is also leading up to… but it’s like an afterthought and it’s clear that the author is bored with the story and ready to move on.

I was excited about the final episode of the Iron Druid Chronicles – but this was a hugely disappointing read.

This book is more like a detailed plot outline than a finished novel. Events happened at a rapid pace, as if ticking off a checklist of plot points Atticus had to deal with. Meanwhile Owen & Granuaile has no cameo adventures that barely have any connection to the main story – though at least there’s a bit of fun humor here.

The frenetic pace comes at the expense of characterization – all of the characters feel like pale imitations of themselves in the previous book. As a result there is very little emotional impact.

Even the big climax of the story didn’t unfold in any meaningful way and I was left with the thought “Is that so?”
