SEA OF RUIN has been on my radar ever since it came out because I quite like old fashioned pirate romances and the cover design has a distinctly vintage feel to it, like the author. The author (and artist, obvi) is trying to pay homage to the shirt-ripers of the past. As a lover of the old fashioned slit dresses, I absolutely love that. And the only thing better than reading a modern-day flashback is to convince a few of your friends to read it with you, so thanks to Rebecca, Aaliyah and Koistyfishy for exploring the “sea” with me. this destruction”.

The book is written in the first person and has a very flamboyant, breath-taking narrative style that reminds me a lot of the work of Natasha Peters, a shirt-ripping author from the 70s and 80s who wrote books in… First person follows a female protagonist over the years as she grows up and is shaped by the chaotic elements of her life. In particular, this reminds me of SAVAGE SURRENDER, which also features a sly heroine, the rock type, and a toxic romance with a dangerous, haunting hero who is insurmountable.
