Servant of the Shard – Audiobook Online
Servant of the Shard is the first book in the Forgotten Realms: The Sellswords series by author R. A. Salvatore.
Assassin: Surrounded by dark elves, Artemis Entreri tightens the siege on the streets of Calimport. He calls for caution, his black donor getting more and more ambitious. The assassin would soon find himself walking the path his most hated enemy had walked before him – the road leading to a place where someone like Entreri would never be welcome.
The Drow: Jarlaxle ascended from the dark Menzoberranzan with only evil intentions. The evil Crystal Shard’s influence on him grew until even the lethal agents he brought along became enraged. When Bregan D’aerthe himself begins to turn against him, Jarlaxle will be forced to find a savior in the man he will enslave.
Readers’ favorite character from the Drizzt Saga is Jarlaxle, the leader of Bregan D’Earth’s drowning leprechaun. We love Jarlaxle for being brave enough to steer the nanny mothers of Menzoberranzan spider city. We love him for his code of honor among thieves. And there’s always another trick up his sleeve.
In Servant of the Shard, Jarlaxle met his rival and fell under the control of Crenshinibon, a magical artifact fused together from the souls of seven immortal sorcerers. What I like about this novel is that Salvatore is top-notch, with layers of plot and clearly articulated action sequences. Additionally, a mix of characters like Cadderly and Danica from Salvatore’s Cleric Quintet team up with old enemies of Drizzt.
Possession of artifacts is a recurring theme later in the series. In a way, this book could be a twist to Jarlaxle’s character arc, stripping him of his invincibility and deus-ex-machina-style resources and trapping him. on the surface where his social manipulation skills are nearly useless. This could be an interesting direction, but instead, Salvatore chose to keep the character of Jarlaxle static as his invincible rogue-mage-warrior, always one step ahead of everyone else. or more steps.
Although this book is written with the same quality as R A Salvatore’s Drizzt series of books, this book is not as good. Maybe this is because I couldn’t find anything to like about the main characters. Artemis & Jarlaxle are good side characters but there’s nothing likable about them and the relationship between them is pretty unbelievable. In the end, I was satisfied when I finished the book and unlike the Drizzt series, this is not a book I will read again.
