But as her power increased, Alina fell deeper into Darkling’s forbidden magic game, and further and further away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her strength, and the love she always thought would guide her – or risk losing everything to the coming storm.

I like Leigh Bardugo’s writing style, but I found this book difficult because Alina was so frustrating in this part. Also, the lack of The Darkling really took away from the magic I experienced with Shadow and Bone.

I expect character development to improve in Ruin and Rising as I have no doubt that Leigh will extinguish all my hopes that Alina and Darkling will end the game (yes, I’ve read those revelation – but her ability to give you hope in one and then tear it to another page is why I like the tension she creates in all the books I’ve read about her).

Siege and Storm is an interesting story. To be honest, I find myself often struggling with fantasies. Too many strange names and places to remember and pronounce. This book is an exception for me. It’s not a fluff ball but it never takes you so deep that you get lost. The plot stays on track and the people and places are minimal, which is, in my opinion, essential for a great fantasy movie.

Wild adventure, beautiful magic, good and evil, and a little love sprinkled in. What more do you need?
