Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a beautiful book by author Becky Albertalli.
Simon Spier, sixteen years old and not openly gay, prefers to save his film for the school musical. When an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is in danger of being brought to the limelight. Now Simon is really being blackmailed: If he hadn’t played the wingman for the class clown Martin, his gender identity would have become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pseudonym of the boy he emailed with, would be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends and his emails with Blue becoming more and more flirtatious, Simon’s junior year suddenly turns complicated. Now, change-averse Simon must find a way to step out of his comfort zone before being pushed out – without alienating his friends, compromising himself or fumbling for happiness with a lovable man. , the most confusing he has ever met.

Now a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox: Love, Simon.

William C. Morris Award Winner: Best Youth Debut of the Year

Simon Spier is gay, and the only person who knows is Blue, his mail friend. The problem is, he doesn’t really know who Blue is. When a classmate gets a screenshot of Simon and Blue’s emails, he threatens to kick Simon out of the whole school unless Simon helps him date the girl he likes.

I watched Love, Simon a few years ago before reading this book, but managed to forget all the details like who Blue really is, so it was fun to read without knowing (not that hard to guess). to that). The book is just as endearing as the movie, although I found Simon a bit uncomfortable reading the book and I wasn’t interested in Leah at all.

Having said that, I loved Simon’s narrative voice and thought the general tension of being a teenager was handled very well. Add to that the challenges of being weird, and Simon can be forgiven for being a bit self-centered at times.

Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda is a really fun novel to read, but it’s not the easiest novel for me to judge as a casual reader. I’ve read arguments that this novel is written for a more casual audience than LGBT, and that’s probably true. Really, I have no way to rate it. Perhaps this novel will speak to you on a personal level and perhaps not. However, I can say that I really like it.

While the book doesn’t have a lot of plot, it does present a truly moving character study of a gay teenager as he’s forced to come out. It’s really about seeing why going public is such a “big deal”, contrasting the views of Simon’s outspoken friends (many of whom don’t fully understand him) with the complexities of the matter. complicated in Simon’s feelings. While the story may seem simple on the surface, it explores some very complex themes as Simon struggles to define himself and discover what he means to those around him.
