Sisters Of The War – Audiobook Online By: Rania Abouzeid

An extraordinarily truthful account of the enormous tragedy of the civil conflict in Syria.

Since the civil war that turned into a revolution in Syria began in 2011, more than 500,000 civilians have been killed and more than 12 million Syrians displaced.

Rania Abouzeid, one of the leading journalists on the subject, follows two pairs of sisters from opposite sides of the conflict to give listeners a first-hand look at the turmoil and devastation that life has caused. This conflict has caused. Ruha, a Sunni Muslim, and her sister Alaa have to fend off constant attacks by the Syrian government in rebel-held territory.

Two Alawite sisters, Hanin and Jawa, try to live a normal life in Syria’s police-controlled state. The girls grew up in a world where nightly bombings were frequent and shrapnel was seen as a toy. They testified to arrests, murders, destroyed homes, and other atrocities that most adults cannot imagine. However, the war did not diminish their hope.

Through the stories of Ruha and Alaa and Hanin and Jawa, Abouzeid articulates the complex conditions in Syria that led to the outbreak of the harrowing conflict. With Abouzeid’s careful attention and remarkable reporting, she crafted an incredibly empathetic and nuanced story about the civil war in Syria, and the promise of progress these young people hold. still show.

This is an engaging, powerful read. The author takes you through the lives of two families and their experiences with the Syrian Civil War primarily through the eyes of their children. It is eye-opening and heartbreaking to see the horrors of war described by a child who sees it as a way of life. Parents strive for normality and fight the injustice that most of us take for granted. We see ourselves, we imagine our lives messed up, and realize that all is possible. Nothing is safe, none of us is immune to the horrors others want to impose on us and we must all be vigilant and support what is good in this world.
