Sitting Pretty The View from My Ordinary, Resilient, Disabled Body – Online Free Audiobook

Sitting Pretty is a memoir by author Rebekah Taussig.
An essay memoir by disability advocate and Instagram account creator @sitting_pretty Rebekah Taussig, processes a lifetime of memories to paint a beautiful, nuanced portrait of a body with looks and moves differently than most.

Growing up as a paralyzed girl in the 90s and early 2000s, Rebekah Taussig only saw disability described as something monstrous (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), inspirational (Helen Keller) or Angel (Forrest Gump). None of this feels right; and as she gets older, she yearns for more stories that allow disability to be complex and normal, uncomfortable and good, painful and satisfying.

Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in an unfit body, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complexities of kindness and charity, living independently and dependently, to experiencing intimacy and the prevalence of possibility theory among us. Daily media transfers directly to everyday life.

Disability affects all of us, directly or otherwise, at one time or another. By exploring this truth in insightful and lyrical essays, Taussig shows the need for more stories and more voices to understand humanity’s diversity. As a society, Sitting Beautiful challenges us to be patient and vigilant, realistic and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we embark on a completely different story.

I love Miss Taussig’s voice; honest, extremely courageous and willing to tell you what it’s like to live in a wheelchair. An enlightening read and reflected on some of the things I’ve learned about how people relate to disability (I have a physical disability) and how to overcome it. Parts of it moved me deeply; I felt I had met a soul mate, and she expressed some of the more difficult truths that I myself have encountered, such as the fear of financial shortfall from being dependent on others and how that might limit the options. This may be true for many women, but for women with disabilities, it is a prominent issue that hovers over the head.

This book is like a warm, intimate conversation with a friend. Topics of social alienation, love, friendship, acceptance, and self-doubt make this book emotionally accessible to everyone. Brave Rebekah shares her inner world with us and challenges us, without disabilities, to think more deeply about the possible, and more shocking, of what kindness is and isn’t What is that! Thank you Rebekah for this brave and important conversation starter. I hope the next issue will provide a book club guide to getting people talking about these important issues.
