So You Want to Be a Wizard – Free Full Audiobook
So You Want to Be a Wizard is the first book in the Young Wizards series by author Diane Duane.
Because of her determination to fight with words instead of fists, 13-year-old Nita is regularly abused by a group of classmates. One day, fleeing their beatings, she hid in the only safe place nearby: the library. A book about magic catches her eye, and Nita finds the help she needs in its pages. As she moved from chapter to chapter, Nita learned more complex spells. Soon, stepping through a world portal, she entered a dark city with vicious taxis and carnivorous fire bugs. What starts out as a simple quest quickly turns into a struggle to prevent a powerful and ominous force from returning to Nita’s world.
Ranked alongside the best of Madeleine L’Engle and Diana Wynne Jones, Diane Duane’s magical tale of magic and wisdom has become a modern fantasy classic. Christina Moore’s delightful narration captures all the excitement and danger in this thrilling fantasy adventure.
I was thrilled to finally have the Young Wizards series in e-book form, even if I finally get the new Millennium editions on my Kindle. It would be nice to compare the two.
I still like the story, the characters, the setting. Diane Duane has a knack for creating worlds you wish you could set foot in too, or scenes that play out very easily in your mind. And, since this is an original edition ebook, I know print edition continuity issues will still be there and technology issues.
What amazes me is how many formatting errors there are in the Kindle versions – missing punctuation, the word ‘a’ being replaced with ‘.3’, random branding symbols and scattered asterisks. junk in the text, weird capitalization, and some words being rendered meaningless (like um becoming rm, or nr). There are several chapters in each, and while the story is still engaging enough, these are (for me) distracting enough to break the flow.
My mom read Diane Duane’s Young Witch Series to me when I was a kid and I love them now as well then. The series has a timeless vigor that makes it pure fun for readers of all ages. For the first time in many years it was great pleasure to read aloud ‘You Want to Be a Witch’ to me. Christina Moore, the narrator, did a wonderful job of bringing Nita, Kit, and Fred to life. I’m definitely buying the other installments in the series right now and really looking forward to hearing them.
