She also has to decide who to trust: Jeb, her wonderful best friend and crush, or the charming but questionable Morpheus. The one who guides her through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of her own.
But a series of inexplicable events lead her to question whether the curse is truly insane and whether there is any truth to the stories of Wonderland. Soon, drawn by a mysterious voice, Alyssa must make her own journey down the rabbit hole to break the curse. The problem is, she accidentally drags her childhood friend Jeb, whom she has a secret crush on, with her.
They quickly discover that Alice had originally seen Wonderland through a child’s eyes, and that the real world was darker and more distorted than Alyssa remembered. She must face killer flowers, outwit an octobenus (a hybrid of a walrus and an octopus!), and meet the mysterious Morpheus, her lifelong dream companion and friend of Alice initial. The text is as beautiful and complex as the cover illustration, and Alyssa’s journey both iterates and transforms the original in imaginative ways. The constant battle between her desire to break the curse and her desire to let go of her impulsive ‘dark’ side leaves the reader turning pages to find out how it all turned out.
All in all, a great debut! I highly recommend this book to fans of Lewis Carroll’s wacky, eccentric Alice books as well as anyone looking for a slightly surreal, creative, and totally insane book in a way. best possible!
