Spoiler Alert: A Novel – Free Online

Spoiler Alert: A Novel is a good book by author Olivia Dade.
Olivia Dade appears in the delightfully hilarious romantic comedy set in a fan fiction world, in which a devoted fan has a surprise date with the celebrity she likes, who is secretly posting his own fictional story.

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. The world may know him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on television, but fanfiction readers call him by another name: Book! AeneasWouldNever. Marcus vents his frustrations with the show through anonymous stories about the internet’s favorite couple, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone discovers his personality online, he will end up in Hollywood.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. An avid Lavinia fan, she’s long hid her fanfic and cosplay interests from her “real life” — but not anymore. As she dared to post her latest costume creation on Twitter, her oversized outfit went viral. And when Marcus asks her out to annoy her critics online, official truth becomes stranger than fiction.

On their date, Marcus quickly realizes that he wants more from April than a one-off publicity stunt. But when he finds out she’s the unrepentant Lavinia Stan, his fandom’s best friend, he has one more big secret to keep from her.

Marcus’ love and career are on the brink, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in the fandom be canceled soon?

I think I will like this book. One of my favorite love jokes is when one part of the couple is a famous actor. Add the fact that this book is full of quotes about the TV show GOT, deals heavily with fandom, and seems to have a lot in common with You’ve Got Mail? Sign me up!

Instead, I think this book is fine. The spoilers are mentioned after this section because I don’t think I can say why I didn’t like this book without mentioning anything.

I think it’s an extremely interesting premise when Marcus behaves a lot more stupidly than whenever he has to do an interview or interact with the public. It’s a fun way to stay out of the public eye when your entire career revolves around it. Except that I don’t like the way the author actually implemented it. As they leave the museum date and the paparazzi surround them and Marcus essentially takes off his shirt to distract them from harassing April, he feels… a bit creepy. Not sure why but I really don’t like it.
