Stage Fright/ Jimmy McSwain Files Series, Book 3 – Online Free

Stage Fright is the third book in the Jimmy McSwain Files Series by author Adam Carpenter.
All the world is a stage, but in Stage Fright, Hell’s Kitchen’s private detective Jimmy McSwain learns that life on evil planks can be a killer.

The Harold Calloway Theater on West 47th Street is the venue for the new play Triskaidekaphobia, and the play’s playwright has received threatening messages. Theater owner and lead producer Wellington Calloway hired Jimmy to investigate, but the case was not without its complications. His mother was the head there, and Jimmy grew up in its aisle. His ex, Remy, is also a costume designer for the show, a man he hasn’t seen in years.

Further making his life more difficult is the mysterious Seetha Assan, who is involved – albeit temporarily – with the case that will haunt Jimmy forever – the murder of his biological father. She may have clues to help him solve the ultimate cold case.

As the play’s opening night draws near, Jimmy finds himself caught up in a combination of egos and personalities, all while searching for the missing Seetha. Scattered in the mix and fall of the relationship with Captain Francis X. Frisano, and suddenly Jimmy’s life is moving toward tragedy. That’s when a killer strikes, and suddenly there’s no more pretending. Life on stage has become too real and too deadly. Just like on the shabby streets of Manhattan.

Jimmy McSwain is back, still haunted by the mystery of his father’s death. This must be reversed when the head of the Calloway Theatre, and his mother’s boss, need to find out who is sending death threats to the author of the theater’s latest play. If that’s still not enough on his plate, Jimmy is introduced by his one-time lover, along with the sister of the man who may have killed his father.

Once again Adam Carpenter weaves a tight, sensual mystery. It is filled with complex characters, and countless twists that keep this reader glued to the story. His image of New York made me feel like a local, not just a tourist. I thank the book gods that I found this series.

Good Viet. I like Jimmy and the way he presents it, but his four-book obsession with the death of his father has become tiresome and unsettling, just like his puzzling attraction/rejection of reasonable sexual attraction to Frank. I want to read another one, but only if the protracted solutions to both of these plots are finally over. The author really can’t chain this forever. Actually. It becomes annoying.
