This is the story of Leif Grettison, a crew member on humanity’s first flight to the stars, even though he never expected to make that trip.

It’s the year 2069. Trouble, a decade plus proxy wars and direct wars between the United States, Russia, and China, has brought the world to the brink of the apocalypse. It was close enough to eventually frighten the leaders of the great powers into signing the Treaty of Geneva, a set of agreements pledging peace, cooperation and dismantling military complexes.

At the heart of this is the International Space Commission, organized to promote business in space to serve the world and launch starshots as a rallying point for all of humanity. The mission’s pilots are drawn from three great powers while the crew includes the best and brightest scientists in the world. However, political interests played a role in rallying the crew, and they were divided by academic jealousy, personal dislike, and the very political and ethnic hatreds that created Trouble.

Leif is the only member of the crew who is not a scientist or an engineer. He’s the winner of the BerthRight lottery, a publicity stunt to send an “ordinary volunteer” to the stars. He is a veteran of the United States Army who participated in many battles during the Troubles. When he met one of the pilots, Captain Yang Yong, who had flown for the PLA Air Force during the Troubles, both had the same immediate reaction: Hate at first sight.

However, an interstellar mission far from Earth’s help faces many dangers, both predictable and unforeseen, and returning home carries with it the hidden danger of it’s him. Tackling these threats requires non-scientific skills. If the crew reaches their destination and returns alive, soldier Leif and flying girl Yong will need to figure out how to work together. That is, if they don’t kill each other first.

Great book. Hope there is a sequel. Really enjoyed the story and the narrator. Great.
