The second is a completely different story.

In Joe Pickett’s fourteenth adventure, C.J. Box gives the warden the crime-sweeping game back with a special mission for the eccentric governor of Wyoming. This time Joe is sent on an undercover mission to the Black Hills to investigate rumors that a wealthy rancher is behind a series of disappearances of famous wealthy people who have caused enmity. with some in the process of rising to the top of their various businesses. A minor episode concerns Sheridan, Pickett’s oldest daughter, being a boarding assistant in her college dorm and suspicions of a reclusive student and his possibility of being a threat to with campus. In addition, adopted daughter April has a new, older boyfriend that Joe and Marybeth do not accept.

I like these books, but some things are getting old. We get it Box, you want Marybeth to have a crazy woman every time Nate is mentioned. It got to the point where she didn’t even hide it, and didn’t seem to give it an F about how Joe might feel about it. It is becoming tedious. Speaking of Nate, it’s funny to make notes in every book he finds about an attractive woman and instantly smitten with them, as if he’d never been in love. When he’s with Whiteplume, it seems interesting because he’s not interested in that sort of thing.

CJ Box fired Joe from his job as a fishery and game manager and let him work with another out-of-state fisheries and game manager who was in fact a ‘spy’ for the company. FBI to report on Templeton, sheriff, judge, etc. not good. Templeton has a lot of people working for him and some famous figures have completely disappeared.
This is a book that you will find hard to put down. While there’s a lot going on, you can see how they fit together. It’s not one of those books that goes from one thing to another and you have to remember what happened in the previous chapters.
