Sarah Lin managed to write a follow-up book that wonderfully builds on the first, while avoiding the terrible power that so many similar series have. The characters are real, have depth, and don’t exist as a collage to serve a purpose. Looking forward to the third installment in the series!

This book is very interesting. The use of energy and other such cultivation games are working to their full potential and are all closely related to the combat in the plot.

However, there are some downsides.

Sadly, the villagers and the plot are like rereading book 1. There’s hints of a larger plot going on, but the main character seems adamantly out of it. The relationships in this book also seem a bit…high school. To a few adults who have been through what the characters go through, it seems odd that they date too much to kiss.

The Demon Bond part is also very confusing. While it shows a bit of Rick’s growth, it’s also confusing and seems to come from the left field.
