Surviving Autocracy – Online Audiobook By: Masha Gessen

“When Gessen talks about tyranny, you listen.” (New York Times)

“A reckoning with what’s been lost over the past few years and a map ahead with our convictions intact.” (Interview)

As seen on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and heard on NPR’s All Things Considered: National Book Award-winning, best-selling journalist offers an essential guide to understanding, combating, and recovering from the devastation of the world, our turbulent times.

This insightful book provides an essential guide to understanding and recovering American democracy from the catastrophic erosion of the past few years. Thanks to her distinctive perspective on the legacy of her childhood in the Soviet Union and two decades covering the rise of totalitarianism in Russia, Masha Gessen has a sixth sense for the manifestations of autocracy – and their unique cross-cultural ability to describe their appearance to Americans.

Gessen not only dissects the erosion of cultural institutions and norms that we hope will save us, but also tells us the story of how in just a few short years we have changed. from a people that saw themselves as a nation of immigrants to a people that bargained on the border wall, inheriting a degraded sense of truth, meaning, and possibility. Remnant autocracy is an inventory of devastation and a call to reckoning but also a beacon for recovery – and hope for what comes next.

If you’ve been following Masha for years and know her various speeches and articles about Trump, I don’t think you’ll find much new here. This is my only complaint. I’ve heard most of this before. However, if you haven’t already, it’s a great introduction to her thinking and writing. She’s a great writer, always has a unique perspective on things, and is an important read on Trump.

Ms. Gessen brings to light many unknown factors in the 45th president’s administration and autocratic presidency. She not only shares her own knowledge and experience in the 45th president. this field but also reveals behind-the-scenes activities that we are not aware of as US citizens. We harm ourselves by not educating ourselves on this terrifying portrait of a future we can afford.
