  • By: Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in 1892. It contains the first short stories told about the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. The stories are collected in the same sequence, not supported by any fictitious chronology. The only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson and are all related in the first-person narrative from Watson’s point of view.

The first story, “A Scandal in Bohemia”, includes the character Irene Adler, who, although appearing only in this one story by Doyle, is a prominent figure in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally a love for Holmes. Doyle has included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favorite Sherlock Holmes stories, choosing “The Adventures of the Speckled Band” as his favorite.

Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories really helped guide me to a love of reading. I was only ten years old and remember my first Holmes book very well, which required side notes explaining the meaning of some British terms and slang. The adventures of Holmes have fascinated me, and I have enjoyed countless depictions of the character in the media over the past 50 years. I go back to Conan Doyle stories to clean up my palette. Highest recommendation!
