The Body Double
- A Novel
- Narrated by: Emily Rankin
A dark, sparkling debut novel with a Vertigo twist by Hitchcock, The Body Double is the suspenseful story of a young woman hired by a stranger to give up her old life and identity to pose a reclusive Hollywood star.
A strange man discovers our anonymous narrator selling popcorn at a dilapidated small-town movie theater and offers her a lucrative but odd position: She will forget about her job, acquaintances, even her name, and move to Los Angeles, where she will become the double body of the troubled and famous celebrity Rosanna Feld. A nervous breakdown has kept Rosanna out of the public eye, and she needs someone who looks like her to take her place in Hollywood’s tabloid media circus.
Supervised by Max, who hired her to do the job, our narrator spends the day locked in a small hillside apartment watching sneaky videos of Rosanna, dressed as Rosanna, Eat Rosanna’s favorite foods, practice her manners, learn to be Rosanna in every way. But when she went public as Rosanna, dined at fancy restaurants, shopped in trendy boutiques, and finally ventured to dinner parties with Rosanna’s true confidants, alarming questions began to arise. What really caused Rosanna’s mental breakdown? Will she ever come back? And is Max really her ally or something more sinister? The Body Double is a wonderfully plotted novel about Hollywood fame, beauty, and darkness.
Needless to say how much fun it was to follow the main character’s mind. Beyda did a great job of making this woman her new reality. You can really feel her seeping into Rosanna’s world, life, essence. I don’t think I’ve ever been taken on such a journey in a story. Loved it!!!
