In André Leon Talley’s first magazine job, with Andy Warhol in Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Promoted by his knowledge and love of fashion, André moved to Paris as the office head of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily, befriending some of fashion’s most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). A racially tinged encounter with a family member of Yves Saint Laurent brought him back to New York and into the Vogue offices under Grace Mirabella. There he eventually became a creative director, developing an unlikely but close friendship with Anna Wintour. As he rose to the top of Vogue magazine, André also rose to become the most influential man in fashion.

Chiffon Trench offers a candid look at who’s who over the past 50 years of fashion. Both ruthless and empathetic, this gripping memoir faithfully tells the story of how André not only survived against a backdrop of brutal style but thrived – despite racism, scandalous rumors and all the other challenges of this notoriously fierce industry – to become one of the most famous voices and faces in fashion.

Throughout the audiobook are also André’s own personal struggles that have influenced him over the decades, along with intimate stories of the people he has turned to for inspiration (Diana Vreeland , Diane von Fürstenberg, Lee Radziwill, to name a few), and of course his Southern roots and unchanging faith, which guided him from an early age.

The result is a very engaging listening that captures the essence of a world few of us can truly access, but a world we all want to know more about.
