From the New York Times bestselling author of Women of the Silk and The Samurai’s Garden comes a beautiful and evocative historical novel about a Japanese-American family set in sugar plantations. in Hawaii.

Daniel Abe, a young doctor in Chicago, is finally back in Hawaii. He has his own reasons for returning to his childhood home, but it’s not to revisit the past, unlike his uncle Koji. He can’t wait to meet Daniel, whom he has always considered his son, but he knows it’s time to tell him the truth about his mother and father. But Daniel’s arrival coincides with the awakening of the Mauna Loa volcano, and its treacherous path toward their village has stirred both new and age-old passions in their community.

Alternating past and present – from the day the volcano erupted in 1935 to decades ago – The Color of Air weaves together the stories of Daniel, Koji and Mariko to create a rich, vibrant chorus , bittersweet, honoring their lifelong ties to each other and to their immigrant communities. As Mauna Loa threatens their lives and livelihoods, it also unearths long-kept secrets smoldering beneath the surface combining past and present, revealing the way forward for all. Surname.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and it was very easy to listen to. I loved the tone and storytelling of the book—instead of feeling like there were too many details to follow, I felt like I was in the stories of the characters’ lives.
