Great story, great characters and great dialogue. Literary masterpiece? read Moby Dick, for an interesting look at the ’50s and the life of the police when they were in power… This is the series. Teddy is my favorite character after reading 3 novels in the series. You’ll have to read them to find out why, no spoilers here.

The first novel I read by Ed McBain and it wasn’t until the end that I realized I had been duped. He, Ed, is actually Evan Hunter, the famous writer of stage and screen. No wonder it’s full of police suspense and understanding.
