The Cuckoo’s Calling – Cormoran Strike Book 1 By Robert Galbraith
The Cuckoo’s Calling is a crime, mystery, and thriller novel published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith by J. K. Rowling. It is the first novel in the series titled Cormoran Strike. If you want more from the series, check out The Silkworm. Furthermore, you can listen to Career of Evil as the third novel in this series.
The narration is one of the high points of the novel. It is performed by Robert Glenister. He has done all the characters justice. There isn’t much to complain about this one.
Cormoran Strike is barely getting by as a private investigator. He lost one leg to a landmine in Afghanistan. The other one isn’t doing much well either because of the circumstances. He is down to one client and the creditors are calling. He has also broken up with his longtime girlfriend. As a result of that, he is living in his office.
Things change for the better when a strong case appears in front of him. John Bristow walks through the door with a shocking story. He is the brother of supermodel Lula Landry who was known as the Cuckoo among her friends. She fell in the jaws of death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. Thus, Strike gets on the case and finds himself in a world filled with millionaires and super-star celebrities. He might have seen detectives before, but none of them are like Strike.
This novel turned out to be a very standard detective novel. A war veteran who is down on his luck is searching for a case. Unexpectedly, he gets the case of a lifetime. We have heard that story before. It seems like Rowling thought she had to prove something by writing for adults.
