The Enemy/ Jack Reacher Book 8 By: Lee Child

“The Enemy” tells the story of ex-military police officer Jack Reacher, who is investigating the mysterious death of a soldier in 1990. As he delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of secrets, corruption, and cover-ups within the military establishment. Along the way, he encounters a cast of complex and intriguing characters, including a seductive general’s daughter and a tough-minded investigative journalist. With his trademark blend of intelligence, toughness, and moral clarity, Jack Reacher navigates through the tangled web of lies and deceit to reveal the truth behind the soldier’s death.

“The Enemy,” Jack Reacher’s ninth book, takes us back to January 1990, right after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Reacher was a Major in the Military Police.

One of the things I liked about the previous book, “The Persuader,” was that it gave me a glimpse of what Jack Reacher was like when he was in the military. It makes me hungrier. It probably had the same impact on Lee Child as “The Enemy is set entirely in Reacher’s Army’s past.

“The Enemy” is a kind of book “Origin of Wolverine”. it gave me a deeper understanding of how the Jack Reacher I met in the previous books became.

“The Enemy” explores how the US Army works through its investigation into the General’s death. The plot is tight, complex and satisfying, spiced up by conflicts with a goddamn superior officer with an agenda and a larger mystery surrounding a large-scale reassignment that has coordinated but unexplained by the Special Unit MPs.

I know nothing about the US Army other than what I’ve seen of their bases in Germany and the UK but I found Child’s description of it very convincing and compelling: the sheer size of the organization. then, how the bases are operated. the same everywhere in the world, right down to the menu in the Officer’s Club, the power of the ranks, the freedom to operate the system, the complete no control over where you will serve and under Who.

I enjoyed meeting Reacher outside of the US, in Germany (where US bases make everything seem as close to home as possible) and France, where Reacher, the son of a French woman, seemed at home. more than in North Carolina. I was intrigued to see how Reacher treated his brother, a man who was killed in Jack Reacher’s first book, “The Murder Floor” and who was conjured up by a ghost in the sixth book. “It didn’t fail” when Reacher was approached by his brother’s ex. girlfriend.

Reacher in 1990 appears to be less damaged and less lost than Reacher in other books. The military and family give him stability and a sense of purpose in life. It’s clear how losing these things would make him worse.

“The Enemy” is a well-written historical crime investigation novel that will be as engaging as a stand-alone novel. The insight it gives into Reacher’s origins makes it a fascinating book and encourages me to thank that Reacher novels will continue to get better, which is good news since I still have ten years left. one more book.

New Year’s Day 1990. A soldier was found dead in a dirty motel bed. Jack Reacher is an officer on duty.

The soldier turned out to be a two-star general. The situation was bad enough, then Reacher found the general’s wife.

This suspenseful thriller goes back in time to a younger Reacher, in playing cards. A Reacher still believes in service. A Reacher who imposes military discipline. Even if only in his own pragmatic way…

The book was so interesting that I missed my daily news cycle. I’ll catch up now, then start another book in the series. For a moment, I thought the ending was a bit moral, but that was quickly dismissed.
