The story follows the adventures of Adele Mundy and Daniel Leary, two officers serving in the Royal Cinnabar Navy, as they embark on a dangerous mission to retrieve a valuable artifact from a distant planet called Kostroma.

Along the way, Adele and Daniel encounter various obstacles and enemies, including the Kostroman government, hostile alien species, and even a rogue AI that threatens their mission and their lives. With their skills and ingenuity, however, Adele and Daniel are able to outmaneuver their foes and successfully complete their mission.

While the Cinnabar Republic was at peace with the Confederacy, warriors like Lt. Daniel Leary and Signal Officer Adele Mundy must find other jobs, such as escorting a pair of wealthy nobles on an expedition to the back of the afterlife.

Princess Cecile, the corvette for which they carved their fame in fire letters, has been sold as a private yacht, but she still has her guns, missiles, and veteran crew. me. Daniel and Adele will need all of that as they face winged dragons, an Auxiliary cruiser, jealous lovers, and a mysterious oracle who truly foresees the future.

However, that won’t be enough when they infiltrate a secret Alliance base and find a hostile fleet ready for a war that will wipe Cinnabar out of the strategically important branch of the galaxy. Preventing that will require skill, courage and more luck than a sane man can even pray for; and it would require a space battle on a scale that a small corvette like Princess Cecile would have no right to engage in.

But she’ll be in the middle of a fight anyway, because Daniel, Adele, and their group of Cinnabars will never turn their backs on a fight.

It’s a great story this time around, with several subplots that fit seamlessly into the overall thrust of the novel. A very interesting way of listening all the way around. Victor Bevine’s reading is still pretty timid for personal and space cuts and fight scenes, but I think it’s less distracting, perhaps because I’m used to it.

Daniel and Mundy get a job transporting some foreign nobles to the back of the afterlife and things go from boring to packed with action. A sequel to Daniel and Mundy’s great adventure story brought to life with visual effects by Victor Bevine.
