The Fear and the Freedom is Keith Lowe’s sequel to the Savage Continent. While that book paints a panorama of Europe in horror as World War II draws to a close, Fear and Freedom examines all that has happened since, focusing on The changes brought about by the Second World War – at the same time one of the most catastrophic and most creative events in history.

It killed millions and wiped out empires, and created the idea of human rights and gave birth to the United Nations. It was because of the war that penicillin was first mass-produced, computers were developed, and rockets were first sent to the edge of space. The war created new philosophies, new ways of life, new architecture: this was the era of Le Corbusier, Simone de Beauvoir and Chairman Mao.

But amid the wave of revolution and idealism, there are also fears of globalization, fear of the atomic bomb, and indescribable longing for a past that is gone forever. All of these and many other things happened as a direct result of war and continue to affect the world we live in today.

I learned a great deal from this book which is extremely informative and thought-provoking. It certainly made me re-evaluate some of my preconceived ideas.
It is very well put together and written in a highly readable style. I look forward to further books by this author.
