Lieutenant Billy Boyle reluctantly accompanied Major Samuel Harding, his boss, on the first boat to land on the Algerian coast during the Allied invasion. Their mission was to arrange the surrender of Vichy French forces. But there was disagreement between the regular army, the local militia, and De Gaulle’s Free French. American black market traffickers allied with the enemy to move medical supplies to the Casbah, leading to numerous murders that Billy must solve while trying to rescue the girl he loves, a British spy who was murdered catch.
This story is very interesting. I’m a huge fan of Masie Dobbs and was looking for something along those lines and found this series. I really love the characters and the plot are real wartime happenings. I highly recommend them.
I really liked this book. Billy is an imperfect hero, which makes him all the more interesting in my opinion. Britain arrived in Algeria with the “first wave” of American invaders, but things did not go as planned. His girlfriend was taken prisoner and he spent a good part of the book trying to rescue her. There’s a smuggling ring and a few murders that need his attention along the way. In the end, things turn out well but Billy and his countrymen were changed by their war experience and had to learn to live with the changes.
