At the age of 36, while serving on a jury, author Molly Wizenberg found herself attracted to a female lawyer she barely knew.

Married to a man for nearly a decade and a mother of a toddler, Wizenberg tries to get back to life as she knows it, but something inside of her has changed in a way hard to understand. Instead, she’ll discover that our life’s trajectories are rarely as smooth or logical as we’d like to believe.

Like many of us, Wizenberg has long understood sexual orientation as a stable part of who we are: we are “born this way”. Suddenly, she realized that her story was more complicated. Who is she, she wondered, if something at her core could change so radically.

The Fixed Stars is a tense, gripping memoir that explores timely and timeless questions about family desires, identities, limitations, and capabilities. In true and poignant prose, Wizenberg forged a new path: overcoming the darkness of separation and divorce, reaching out to family and friends, learning to raise a young child together, and realizing A new vision of love. The result is a candid and moving story about letting go of rigid definitions and ideals that no longer fit and learning instead for who we are.

I know some people didn’t like the narrator, but I think that’s awesome. For whatever reason, Molly didn’t narrate this book, but this narrator is the next best storyteller I think. If you listen to Molly’s Spilled Milk podcast, you’ll find that this narrator really captures Molly’s voice. This story is as heartfelt as her other books, but takes it to a more personal level. Loved it. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.

Molly Wizenberg gently and beautifully guides us through trials and tribulations to become people, not stereotypes. What is sex and gender. A great book to help seekers find their way. I was impressed by Molly’s way of telling a very difficult subject. The main character Molly, although curious, confused and sometimes self-deprecating, has evolved very highly. I was so moved that I cried and had to laugh out loud. This is worth reading or listening to. The narrator, Erin Mallon, is in the right place.
