Malaya, 1951. Yun Ling Teoh, a lone scarred survivor of a brutal Japanese wartime camp, seeks solace among the jungle-clad tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands.

There, she discovers Yugiri, the only Japanese garden in Malaya, and its owner and creator, the mysterious Aritomo, the exiled former gardener of the Japanese emperor.

Despite the hatred of the Japanese, Yun Ling manages to entice Aritomo to create a garden in memory of her older sister, who died in the camp. Aritomo refuses but agrees to take Yun Ling as his apprentice “until the monsoon comes”. Then she can design a garden for herself.

As the months pass, Yun Ling finds herself drawn to the gardener and his art, while all around them is a communist guerrilla war. But the Garden of Evening Mists remains a mysterious place. Who is Aritomo and how did he leave Japan? And the real story of how Yun Ling managed to survive the war is perhaps the darkest secret.

I love the beauty of the text in this book. Attention to detail in prose – lyrical descriptions and wonderfully imaginative word choices make for a highly stimulating and artistic read, in keeping with the main philosophical theme and the creation of a Japanese garden. There is also a fascinating story about an interesting protagonist set during and after World War II in present-day Malaysia. I recommend this highly.

The story of a woman who went from being a prisoner of war during the second world war to becoming a judge in the Malaysian supreme court. Through the symbolism of a Japanese garden, it explores how she copes with some disappointments in her life as well as some of her successes.
