Miami attorney Jack Swyteck finds himself at the center of a controversial immigration debate when he takes on the heartbreaking case of an undocumented immigrant who fled to the US to protect his daughter and save himself, in this suspenseful and trendy thriller that explores the stories behind the headlines of New York Times bestselling author James Grippando, winner of the Harper Lee Award for Legal Fiction.

Julia Rodriguez and her teenage daughter Beatriz escaped Julia’s bloodthirsty, arbitrary violence and abusive husband back in El Salvador. Arriving in Miami, mother and daughter struggled to carve out the American dream for themselves. Life in the United States was tough but safer, until Julia turned down her boss’s unwanted sexual offers. Suddenly – thanks to an “anonymous” tip to US immigration authorities – she was arrested, locked up with the criminal and expected to be deported. Jack’s only possible legal move to save her is to seek asylum – a long shot that is nearly impossible in today’s tense political climate.

When Julia and Beatriz make the perilous journey north to freedom, they think they’ve left the danger behind. But now, even Miami is not safe. A ruthless enemy may have followed them to South Florida and was buying time, waiting patiently to strike.

In the event that the stakes have never been higher, Jack Sywteck may not have saved his client – even if he did win.

I’m a long time fan of this author but I almost didn’t get this book. I just wasn’t excited about another immigration story. But let me tell you, this isn’t just another immigration story! I didn’t want to put it down! So glad I followed my instincts that told me Grippando books are always great. The narrator was excellent and I hope he continues with all the future Jack Swyteck stories – they just wouldn’t be right without him. Thanks to the author and narrator for such a great book!
