A poignant love and family story that offers a vivid and unique depiction of life in war-torn 1941 Bucharest and life behind the Iron Curtain during the Soviet occupation – perfect for fans of Lilac Girls and Sarah’s Key.

On a cold night in January 1941, a Jewish girl was found on the steps of an apartment building in Bucharest. With Romania’s recent alliance with Nazi Germany, the Jews are in grave danger, subject to increasingly intense persecution. The girl was placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy, childless couple, who named her Natalia. As she adjusts to her new life, she almost forgets about her parents, who were forced to leave her behind. They were even further from her mind when Romania fell to the Soviet Union.

However, as Natalia grows up in a bleak and hopeless world, traces of her identity pierce the surface of her everyday life, gradually leading to a discovery that will change her fate. She falls in love with Victor, an intense young man who, as an impoverished student, has long been friends with her family. Years later, when Natalia was in her 20s and working in a fruit packing warehouse, she and Victor, now an important official in the Communist regime, met again by chance. This time, they are drawn by fate into a passionate love affair despite the obstacles surrounding them and Victor’s dark secrets.

When Natalia is suddenly given a one-time chance at freedom, Victor is determined to help her escape, even if it means losing her. Natalia must make a painful decision: stay in Bucharest with her beloved adoptive parents and the man she fell in love with or seize the chance to finally live her own life and face the painful mystery pain in her past.

This book is set during the Second World War and immediately after, unlike any book I have read before. It was sad and disheartening to know what life would be like for people living under the Communist Regime after the War ended. However, the described gloom does not lead to a hopeless conclusion, fortunately.
In general, I recommend it.

Great story and history of my bloodline towards my mother’s father. She didn’t tell me anything but HE worked very hard but was very angry. But in him there are also German and Hungarian. It’s strange that one person has conquered the other two but he has it all. So I learned a lot but it was strange that she never realized that she was Jewish. I love my readers.
