Timothy Wilde goes to a bar near the Exchange, daydreaming about the day he has enough money to win the girl of his dreams. But when his dreams were literally burned down in a fire that devastated downtown Manhattan, he found himself disfigured, unemployed, and homeless. His brother got Timothy a job in the newly formed NYPD, but he was very skeptical of this new “police force”. And he’s less than thrilled when his new pulse is the infamous Sixth Precinct – on the border of Five Points, the world’s most infamous slum.

One night, while walking around, Wilde actually ran into a little girl – a girl no more than 10 years old – walking through the darkness during her night shift… blood from head to toe.

Timothy knew he should take the girl to the House of Refuge, but he couldn’t abandon her. Instead, he took her home, where she told myths, claiming that dozens of bodies were buried in the woods north of 23rd Street. Timothy wasn’t sure whether to believe her, but when he did. As the truth unfolds, the co-star reluctantly finds himself engaged in a battle for justice that nearly costs him his brother, his romantic obsession, and his own life.

This is the kind of book that grabs your attention and doesn’t let it wander. I always know how much I’m enjoying a book by the number of times I have to hit the 30 second rewind button and it didn’t get much use during this book.
