The Good Husband of Zebra Drive
- The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
- Narrated by: Lisette Lecat
In the life of Precious Ramotswe, a woman who takes great pride in her traditionally good figure, rarely has a dull moment, and in the latest installment of the Female Detective Agency series 1 global favorite, there’s a lot going on on Zebra Drive and Tlokweng Road.
Mma Ramotswe is facing personnel difficulties. First Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni asks to be in charge of a case involving her unfaithful husband. But can a man investigate such matters as successfully as the number one female detective? She then had a small conflict with her assistant, Mma Makutsi, who decided to leave the company, taking with her the 97 percent she received in the typing final from Botswana College of Secrets with her.
Along the way, Mma Ramotswe is asked to investigate a number of complicated cases. Can she explain a series of sudden deaths at a hospital in Mochudi? What about the missing office supplies at a local printing company? These are the kinds of questions she’s well-suited to answer.
In the end, no matter what, Mma Ramotswe knew she could count on Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, who represents all that is solid and right in a changing world. And she has always loved Botswana, the country she is extremely proud of.
This episode is particularly good in the series. By this eighth book in the series, there has been considerable character development, and readers of all eight books understand and know how the characters appear in the series. Because of this situation, McCall Smith was able to draw on their past behaviors to uncover some very complex and thorny Work Ethic considerations and issues. The book is recommended to all readers interested in ethical behavior and all readers of McCall Smith’s books who want to read perhaps the best book of the series since the first book.
