“The Greatest Beer Run Ever” is a memoir written by John “Chick” Donohue and J.T. Molloy. Soon to be a major motion picture written and directed by Peter Farrelly, who has won two Oscars for The Blue Book – a hugely entertaining, entertaining memoir about an Irish-American in New York and a former U.S. Marine, who embarked on a brave, daring plan to deliver beer to his friends serving in Vietnam in the late 1960s.
One night in 1967, 26-year-old John Donohue – better known as Chick – was hanging out with friends, drinking in a New York City bar. The friends gathered there have lost loved ones in Vietnam. Now, they see anti-war protesters turning their backs on the military. A neighborhood patriot came up with an inspiring idea – some would call it a crazy idea. Someone should sneak into Vietnam, spy on their friends there, send them supportive messages from home and share a few laughs with a can of beer. It will be the greatest Beer Run ever. But who would be crazy enough to do that? One man is up for the challenge – a former US Marine turned marine merchant who won’t abandon his friends on the front lines when they need him. Volunteer chicken. A day later, he was on a cargo ship bound for Vietnam, armed with an Irish lucky shirt and a backpack full of alcohol.
Arriving in Quy Nhon, Chick embarks on an adventure that will change his life forever – an adventure that takes him through a series of hilarious escapes and tough melee fights, including the Great Offensive. Lunar New Year celebration. But it doesn’t matter if he can bring joy to his friends and show them how much the people back home appreciate them. .
I enjoyed the book. I grew up near Inwood. Thought Chick was out of his mind but good story. I was a Long Bien a year later and book brought back memories, in an entertaining and light fashion. I recommend it to get a snapshot how it was to be in your early twenties with a cloud of war hovering over your head and society in general.
