The Happy Return By: C. S. Forester – Audiobook Online
The Happy Return is a novel by C.S. Forester which follows the adventures of Royal Navy officer Captain Horatio Hornblower as he travels to Central America to support a revolution against Spanish rule. Along the way, he must navigate political tensions and personal relationships, including a love affair with a married woman. Despite several setbacks, Hornblower ultimately succeeds in his mission and returns to England triumphant. The novel explores themes of duty, honor, and the complexities of human relationships in times of war and revolution.
In 1808 and somewhere off the coast of Nicaragua, the hero of C.S. Forester is back, ready to embark on his next adventure.
The fifth installment in the series, The Happy Return follows Captain Horatio Hornblower as he commands the 36-gun frigate, HMS Lydia. Sent on a mission to weaken the Spanish colonial government, Horatio must form an alliance with a narcissistic revolutionary leader with delusions of grandeur, who goes by the name ‘El Supremo’.
Concurrently facing an advancing Spanish fleet and their much superior fifty-gun ship, the Natividad, Horatio must find a way to ‘capture, sink, burn or destroy’ the enemy. his or her failure and face a British court. Adding insult to injury, Horatio was challenged by the arrival of a particularly attractive passenger, Influential Lady Barbara Wellesley. Vulnerable, alone, and finding his way to England, Horatio couldn’t refuse that woman, but as a happily married man, he found himself tortured by his seductive nature and beauty. Barbara’s amazing beauty.
An English novelist, C.S. Forester was appreciated by his contemporaries for his Napoleonic naval warfare series, and later for the publication Queen of Africa.
Despite his innate ability and endless imagination, Forester came to the writing business much later than expected. Initially studying medicine at Guy’s Hospital, it was only after a cruise with the Royal Navy that he was inspired by the arts, especially developing a fervent love of storytelling. Sadly instead of suffering from arteriosclerosis during a cruise to the Bering Sea, C.S. Forester was disabled in later life, but his imagination and penmanship survived for many years to come.
I love this series and this might be my favorite book by far. Horatio is very human – young, smart, strategic, flawed but doesn’t have much time for self-pity and regret. He’s a great protagonist and has met the right person for him as an intelligent and nuanced female passenger whom he is forced by circumstances to allow aboard his ship in brave feats. , challenging and dangerous. This book makes my heart pound!
