The Hate You Drink – Free Full Audiobook
The Hate You Drink is a good book by author N.R. Walker.
This is a story about addiction and love and how to face life.
Erik and Monroe were best friends for many years, but after Monroe’s parents died, he got too addicted to drinking and partying and lost Erik to his antics. Erik gives him an ultimatum and Monroe doesn’t know what to do and starts having a panic attack.
Erik Keston, son of the Keston Real Estate empire, knows what it takes to be successful. Despite his inherent wealth, he kept his own. He works hard, he’s grounded, he’s brilliant. He is also secretly in love with his best friend.
Monroe Wellman lost her parents three years ago and never grieved, never recovered. Inheriting the family business and wealth means nothing, and his spiral of self-destruction is widespread and spectacular. Dubbed Sydney’s bad boy, he has more days drunk than sober, and the only person who stays with him through it all is his best friend.
But when Monroe hits bottom, Erik gives him an ultimatum, and his entire world comes to a halt. It wasn’t until the fog cleared that Monroe could really see what he was looking for that was never at the bottom of the bottle. It was with him the whole time.
This story revolves around the difficult and complex subject of addiction. It goes beyond Monroe’s alcoholism and addresses Erik’s inability to say no or let Monroe hit rock bottom. It is clear that these people love each other, but they are stuck in a vicious cycle that causes them to hurt each other and there is no basis for them to have anything beyond friendship; Monroe needed a friend more than romance as she struggled with her addiction. Thankfully, much of the story is about recovery, support, and love. These two go through hell – especially Monroe – to finally be together. I really love the layers and complexity of this story and I think it stands out as one of Nr’s most engaging stories. I can’t help but feel the emotions welling up on the page and I’ve been cheering for Erik and Monroe the whole time.
This is a difficult one for me to review for personal reasons. Those reasons have really helped me empathize with Monroe, an addict, and with Erik, his best friend and supporter.
This is a great read, consider the bad start when we see Monroe knee-deep in alcohol and its aftermath. After that, everything is beautifully decorated. I can only imagine that another author, who once plunged us into fury, like Garrett Leigh, would take us all the way to the bottom of the abyss and rave about how we crawled along the rock pit to recover. along with MC – bloody torn nails and all.
Since this is Walker, we didn’t spend much time in the addiction wormhole, nor did we slide over stone walls as we struggled through the recovery process. Instead, we have a solid line from addiction to rehabilitation intervention to a successful relationship and work life.
This is an addiction story with very few victims. Maybe it’s too romantic? But despite that, I enjoyed it and can relate to much of it.
The love between two men is what makes this story so special and worth reading. So despite its dark themes and themes, this story isn’t overly dark or tense, though it may be.
