“The Historian blends a gripping historical plot with the fast-paced and excitement of a horror movie.” (Ellen Keith, author of The Dutch Wife)

A History of Secrets meets the Alice Network in the gripping story of murder and conspiracy in Sweden during World War II by critically acclaimed author Cecilia Eckbäck.

It was 1943, and Swedish neutrality in the war was under pressure. Laura Dahlgren, the young, smart right-hand man of the lead negotiator in Germany, is well aware of these tensions, even as she tries to bow down to the growing conflict. However, when Laura’s best friend from college, Britta, is found murdered in cold blood, Laura is determined to find the killer.

Before her death, Britta submitted a report on racial profiling in Scandinavia to the secretary of the Secretary of State, Jens Regnell. While negotiating a fragile alliance with Hitler and the Nazis, Jens did not understand why he received the report. When the pursuit of the killer Britta leads Laura to his doorstep, the two join forces to find out the truth.

But as Jens and Laura try to untangle the mysterious circumstances surrounding Britta’s death, they only become more mired in a web of lies and deception. This trail will lead to a plot that could subvert their national identity – a plot that some in Sweden will try to hide at any cost.

It’s a great book, I love the performance she’s my favorite reader. The characters are brilliantly developed. My only question is that I thought Jens left Britta’s thesis in the garage and took it out and put it on his desk. I kept waiting for the moment when he would find it because I thought he forgot what he did. I even went back and listened to see if I was wrong. I wonder where did I go wrong.

The plot of this book is engaging and a bit scary. The characters are relatable and Laura and Jens are well defined. The description of the area and other characters is good. I would recommend this book to fans of historical fiction and those who have lived or visited Scandinavia. It was a good read.
