The History Of Love – Audiobook Online

“The History of Love” is a novel by Nicole Krauss that tells the interwoven stories of Leo Gursky, an aging Holocaust survivor living alone in New York City, and Alma Singer, a teenage girl living in the same city with her widowed mother. Leo is a lonely man who spends his days hidden away in his apartment, longing for the son he lost during World War II and the love of his life, Alma Mereminski. Alma Singer is named after the protagonist in a book her mother translated, known as “The History of Love,” a book that Leo had also written for his lost Alma. As Alma Singer tries to uncover the mystery behind the book, her own story becomes intertwined with Leo’s, and the two embark on a journey to find lost love, redemption, and hope in an ever-changing world. The novel explores themes of loss, grief, memory and the power of literature in bringing people together.

Nicole Krauss’ debut novel, Man Walks Into a Room, was shortlisted for the Los Angeles Times Book Awards and her short fiction has been anthology in Best American Short Story.

Now The History of Love has proven Krauss to be one of our freshest and best literary voices.
It’s been decades since Leo Gursky first confessed his heart, then wrote a book about it, at the age of 10, and he’s been in love with the same person ever since. Leo believes his book has faded over time, but what he doesn’t know is that it’s not only survived 60 years without him, but is an inspiration for others. Fourteen-year-old Alma was even named for a character in the book. When she realized how deeply the story had touched her lonely mother, she set out to find answers.

The History of Love is an imaginative tale of love and loss that is both humorous, mysterious, and deeply passionate.

I thought the title drew me to the novel, but I didn’t expect I would enjoy it so much. The voices the narrator gives to the voices that Nicole Krauss creates are perfect. While I find Alma’s voice a bit annoying at times, it’s the right voice for the character. Leo Gursky’s humor is priceless and his pain is palpable. The way in which all the characters of the novel are interconnected seems extraordinary and improbable, but at the same time makes perfect sense.

I love it. Any story about readers reading and becoming a part of their novels always sparks my virtuosity. Here, however, the narrators add a completely different dimension, especially at the end when new voices suddenly appear in the story and the 2 main voices come together. Sometimes funny, engaging, engaging and just beautiful.
