The Hollow / Hercule Poirot Mysteries, Book 26 – Audiobook Online

“The Hollow” is a detective novel by Agatha Christie, part of the Hercule Poirot series, published in 1946. The book is set in the country house of Lytchett St. Mary, where a weekend gathering of notable guests is taking place. One of the guests, Dr. John Christow, is discovered in the swimming pool, having been shot dead. Poirot and detective inspector Grange are called in to investigate the murder. The suspects include Gerda Christow, Dr. Christow’s wife, and Edward Angkatell, the owner of the house who is in love with her. Also present are Henrietta Savernake, a successful artist who was once engaged to Dr. Christow, Lucy Angkatell, Edward’s cousin and a close friend of Gerda, and others. As the investigation progresses, Poirot and Grange discover that each of the suspects has a motive for the murder. The investigation leads to a surprising twist, when the murderer and their motive turn out to be different from what the investigators initially thought. The book is known for its plot complexity, character development, and subtle humor. It is considered one of Christie’s best works, blending intrigue, murder, and dramatic plot twists.

The Hollow / Hercule Poirot Mysteries, Book 26, Audiobook Online By: Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot was greeted warmly from afar when he arrived for lunch at Lucy Angkatell’s country house.

A man lay dead by the pool, his blood dripping into the water. His wife stood over him, holding a revolver.

As Poirot investigates, he begins to realize that beneath the venerable facade lies a tangle of family secrets and everyone becomes a suspect.

This title was previously published as Murder After Hours.

This really stands out to me as another kind of Christie mystery and a very different Poirot mystery. This is probably not for Poirot fans, because he’s really just involved in the story or mystery, and if true, the author once said that she regrets bringing him in this story. But I love it. The characters are deeper and more complex, and the storyline seems to take precedence over mystery, if that makes any sense.

Another Christie with Poirrot is almost in the background, but the characters in The Hollow bring the story to an inevitable conclusion and become very real people in the process. Agatha understands them and gives the reader the opportunity to dive into their minds with her. No fluff here. And Hugh Fraser is as great as ever.
