The Infinite Blacktop
- A Novel
The “delicious and addictive” Claire DeWitt series (Salon) returns with a thrilling novel mystery that follows three separate stories starring the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest detective.” As Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls praised, these novels are “confusing, dreamy, funny, and gritty…Claire DeWitt is an unreliable detective like no other. ”
Claire DeWitt, the tough and tough-talking private investigator, has always been a detective. As a young girl growing up in Brooklyn, Claire and her two best friends, Tracy and Kelly, were fascinated by the book Detection by legendary French detective Jacques Silette. The three have solved many cases together and are inseparable – until the day Tracy disappears without a trace. It was still the only case Claire had ever failed to solve.
Then, in her 20s, Claire is in Los Angeles trying to get her PI license by taking on a cold case that confuses the LAPD. She hunts for the real story behind the death of a painter who was fired 10 years ago, his successful and much admired artist girlfriend who passed away a few months before him.
Today, Claire was on her way to Las Vegas from San Francisco when she was nearly killed by a murderous driver. In a trance of drugs and injuries, she tries to escape the scene, determined to find out the killer’s identity – but the list of people who would be glad to see her dead is not short.
As these three stories converge, some mysteries are solved and others continue to haunt. But Claire, battered and bruised, continues to search for answers to the greatest mystery: what is the purpose of our lives, and how can one survive in a designed world. apparently to break our hearts over and over again?
I love some Claire DeWitt, the tough metaphysical detective in Grann’s previous two books. This new book didn’t disappoint, and Madeleine Maby did a great job of narrating it, but for me, Carol Monda will always be Claire and I can never get used to the transition. Monda sounds more difficult and mundane, and you don’t get to be more difficult or mundane than Claire DeWitt.
