The Ionian Mission
- Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 8
For the first time in Jack Aubrey’s long illustrious career, the sea he had skillfully escaped to with little dignity offered him little consolation from growing boredom with the debt and trouble at home.
Assigned to a temporary commander in “that old Worcester”, Aubrey sailed for the Mediterranean to participate in the Royal Navy’s blockade of the French port of Toulon, where he would be dispatched by Admiral Harte. (unfortunately Admiral Harte himself (whom he cheated on years ago) on a secret mission that promises to draw Aubrey into political conflict. Despite the help of her friend Stephen, Aubrey faced some of the toughest challenges of her career.
It is the eighth book in O’Brian’s 20-volume Aubrey/Maturin series.
This story is less dramatic than the previous books. Most of them are under blockade which I gathered from the book is boring to the crew. I really enjoyed all the additional information O’Brian provided about ships, sailing ships and the Royal Navy in the early 1800s and late 1790s. Patrick Tull did a wonderful job of narrating. story again. Feeling the ending was too abrupt, wish there were more sequels about what happens after the battle. But maybe that comes in the next book.
I read the entire series over and over again a few years ago and now I’m thoroughly enthralled by Patrick Tull’s narration. Well done!
