The most scandalous thing about Yancey Goree’s law office was Goree himself, lounging in an old creaking armchair. The little rickety office, built of red brick, was level with the street the main street of Bethel.

Bethel rests at the foot of the Blue Ridge. Up there are mountains piled up to the sky. Far below, the opaque Catawba glittered in gold along its desolate valley.

June day is at its hottest hour. Bethel dozed off in the warm shade. Trade did not. It was so quiet that Goree, leaning back in his chair, could clearly hear the clack of chips in the grand jury room, where the “court gang” was playing poker. From the open back door of the office, an old road meanders through the lawn to the courthouse. Going off that road cost Goree everything he had – first an inheritance of several thousand dollars, followed by the old family home, and then the scraps. the end of his self-esteem and masculinity.

The “gang” wiped him out. The bad gambler has become a drunkard and a parasite; he lived to see this day come when the men who stripped him of his clothes refused to give him a seat in the game. His words are no longer carried out. The daily card battles arranged themselves accordingly, and he was assigned the vile role of bystander. The sheriff, the county clerk, a vivacious deputy, a gay lawyer, and a chalk-faced man from the “valley” came in, sat at the table, and the clipper was therefore tacitly advised, should go plant more wool.

O Henry (1862-1910) was an American novelist known for his witty and unexpected endings. The Last Leaf is one of his most famous works, set in the fall of the late 1800s. It is the story of two sisters Johnsy and Sue who live together in an apartment in Greenwich, USA. Johnsy was dying of severe pneumonia. There is a tree visible through her window, and somehow she believes she will die when the last leaf of this tree falls. She is losing her will to live. Behrman, a frustrated artist who lives in the same building, often claims that one day he will paint his masterpiece. Sue informs him of Johnsy’s tragic thoughts. That very night, he climbed a tree and drew a leaf for Sue to see. Behrman fell seriously ill from the cold and died after painting his masterpiece, the leaf that would keep Johnsy alive. The story was told with graceful style and dialogue, and was later made into a movie.

A beautifully structured, touchingly moving short story that I’ve loved since childhood and has never lost its authenticity. I very much welcome the opportunity to reread this book and pass it on to my children. Thook shold b in everyone’s private collection.
