The Last Namsara / Iskari, Book 1 – Audiobook Online
“The Last Namsara” is a young adult fantasy novel and the first book in the Iskari series. The story follows Asha, the daughter of the Dragon King, who is known as the “Iskari” and is feared by all because of her ability to summon dragons with her voice. Asha, however, despises the dragons and seeks to atone for her past mistakes by killing every dragon she can find. However, she is set on a path of discovery that makes her question everything she thought she knew.
As the book begins, Asha is forced to make a deal with Jarek, the cruel commandant of her father’s army, to marry him in exchange for information about a way to break an age-old curse. Jarek is focused on power, and he manipulates Asha to do his bidding, ultimately setting her on a course that will change her life forever. In the process, Asha meets Torwin, a slave who is more than he seems, and who helps her see the truth about her people’s history.
As Asha delves into the history of her people, she uncovers a shocking truth that threatens to destroy everything she thought she knew about the world. She also learns that the dragons are not the evil creatures she believed them to be and discovers the secrets of her own family’s past. Along the way, she must face her fears, confront her own prejudices, and find power in her own voice to save herself and those she loves.
The story builds to an exciting climax as Asha and her allies fight to save their people from a tragic fate. The novel ends on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the rest of the series.
The Last Namsara / Iskari, Book 1, Audiobook Online By: Kristen Ciccarelli
Kristen Ciccarelli’s fantasy debut explores an intricately intertwined world of deception, inner darkness, and dragons that fantasy fans won’t be able to resist.
In the beginning, there was Namsara: the child of the sky and the soul, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be darkness- and therefore Iskari. Child of blood and moonlight. Destroyer. The bringer of death.
These are the legends that Asha, the daughter of King Firgaard, grew up learning in secret whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But it wasn’t until she became the most ferocious, fearsome dragon slayer in the land that she took on the role of Iskari next – a lonely fate that made her feel more like a weapon than a girl.
Asha subdues each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no murder can free her from the chains that await at home: her betrothal to the evil commander, a the man holds the truth about her nature in the palm of his hand.
When offered the chance to gain freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth in the ancient stories than she could have expected. With the help of a secret friend – a slave boy from her fiancé’s family -Asha must shed the layers of her Iskari bondage and open her heart to love and light. and the truth was hidden by her.
This story is told so firmly that I am surprised that it is her first published novel. Some of the characters could have used a little more dimension, but it’s definitely enough for me to care about the good guys (and the bad guys, not so much). The plot is good, with just enough twist to add a bit of complexity and suspense. I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say I’m glad it wasn’t a spoiler. Really, the only thing I didn’t like about it was that it was over and I had to wait for the next part.
Love the story. We read it in our book club. Last Christmas, a member of our book club bought books that were wrapped in brown with book suggestions on the front. We each opened our books and this is one of them. We all bought the book and read it for the book club. There’s a little bit of everything. Adventure, action, drama… . Will re – read this author.
