Overall, Chanel Cleeton’s The Last Train to Key West is a gripping historical fiction novel that combines elements of romance, suspense, and tragedy. It offers a vivid portrayal of the devastating hurricane that forever changed the lives of those living in the Florida Keys.

In 1935, three women were forever changed when one of the strongest hurricanes in history hit the Florida Keys.

For travelers traveling on Henry Flagler’s legendary Overseas Railroad, Labor Day weekend is a chance to forget about the economic downturn that beset the nation. But one person’s paradise can be another’s prison, and Helen Berner, a Key West native, yearns to escape.

After the 1933 Cuban Revolution leaves Mirta Perez’s family in a precarious position, she agrees to marry a notorious American. After her wedding in Havana, Mirta went to the Keys for her honeymoon. While she can’t deny her growing attraction to her new husband, his nefarious business interests can threaten not only the relationship but her life as well.

Elizabeth Preston’s trip to Key West is an opportunity to save her once wealthy family from the troubles following the Wall Street crash. Her mission takes her to camps occupied by veterans of the Great War and pairs her with an unlikely ally in a dangerous hunt of his own.

Over the course of the weekend, the women’s paths suddenly intersect, and the danger that surrounds them only with the ferocious force of the deadly storm threatening Keys.

I loved reading this book. The plot was very easy to follow and it was a light read. It follows the story of three different women facing different situations in their lives. Their paths unknowingly intertwine with one another and I love that as the reader you are able to keep track of their stories without it becoming too overwhelming. I enjoyed the narration and found it easy to listen to.
