The Lending Library / A Novel, Audiobook Online By: Aliza Fogelson
For fans of Jane Green and Loretta Nyhan, a moving debut novel about a dreamer who gives her town and herself a wonderful gift: a lending library in her solarium while facing an even higher, life-changing decision.
When the Chatsworth library closed indefinitely, Dodie Fairisle lost her hiding place. How does a small-town art teacher cope without the life tips and never-ending joy that books bring her? Well, when she’s as resourceful and generous as Dodie, she turns her solarium into her own little lending library.
At first just a hobby, this light lover’s paradise has opened up her world in amazing ways. She knows books have power, and soon they’re helping her cement the friendships between her goofy neighbors – and spark an exciting new romance.
But when the chance to adopt an orphan brings Dodie’s secret dream of motherhood within reach, everything else suddenly seems less important. Finding herself at a crossroads, Dodie must figure out what it means to live a happy, fulfilling life. If only there was a book that could tell her what to do.
This book made me laugh, cry and laugh (a lot). When the public library is closed for renovations for how long, Dodie, a teacher and a single woman, decides to use her solarium as a loaner library. Will she be able to balance it all. While at times I found the story a bit off-topic, other times it was in the right place. Dodie had to face death at one point and it was right. Crying quietly into the pillow while trying not to wake my husband is a challenge and I have done it a few times in this book.
I really like the characters, especially Dodie. It’s been a while since I read a book that wasn’t all about romance. The interesting storylines drew me in and kept me coming back for more. I don’t know if people understand this, but I really need a book that I can put down. I still want to go back and continue to find out what’s going on in Chatsworth. I like the fact that I didn’t stay up too late reading, or reading when I should be doing other things. I still want to keep seeing how things go and that’s why I find this a thoroughly enjoyable book.
